“I get out my work and have a show for myself before I have it publicly. I make up my own mind about it-how good or bad or indifferent it is. After that, the critics can write what they pleas…

I think yo’d have to be financially independent to be able to be so blase about the critics opinions.

I empathise, especially if we are self-critical. Otherwise, if we try to make everybody happy we will never do anything. Thanks, Sarah!

Exactly, Olga. That’s not to say it’s always easy to maintain such an attitude.

Wonderful quote – just wish I could feel that level of freedom and stop worrying about what others think of my work.

It’s certainly not easy but it is possible. I think it gets easier as one gets older. I’ve found it so.

A woman who knew her own mind, undoubtedly.

It’s an admirable attitude that we all need to cultivate from birth, I think. Far from easy. x

Without criticism there would be nothing to aspire to overcome.
The rocks and trees don’t comment.
The day and night cannot be competed with.
We can measure ourselves against others, or against time and effort of all humanity, or we can just take some criticism and delight in growing past it.
If it hurts greatly it is because we think too much of ourselves and have forgotten that those who look upon and judge our work are just self affirming their own opinions too.
Today your work is good, tomorrow it will be better.

I agree with the first part of your comment but I think you may be reading a little too much into O’Keefe’s words. While we all strive to be better, too often we allow the reactions of others to dictate how we feel about our own work, for good or ill. I don’t believe for one minute that being stung by another’s criticisms is because we think too much of ourselves. Not the world I inhabit at any rate. I’ve found that people who think too much of themselves are usually the most insecure or else they’re psychopaths!

perhaps reading too much in, or commenting too fast, went back and re read. however psychopaths do fit, and often are disguised as normal until exposed.
