First Night Design | Land, Ho!

A direct contrast to the feel of yesterday’s Song for Freedom, Land, Ho! is another design from a few years ago that centres on my photograph of an abandoned fishing boat in Nea Chora in Chania on the island of Crete, and to which I added textures from Shadowhouse Creations.

To say ‘abandoned’ is, perhaps, to stretch the truth since one sees many apparently abandoned boats  (and houses) on this island that have not been abandoned but have been worked on for years without any sign of improvement! When it comes to the dilapidated houses, it can be assumed that the owners are a disparate collection of family members who have inherited the property and who can’t agree on what should be done with it. It is so sad to see them going by the board as they are often three or four hundred years-old and beautiful examples of Venetian or Ottoman Empire architecture.

Gonna buy a bottle and drink my fill.

  1. A fantastic composition of design – love this one Sarah. Gives a feel of an old photograph and iconic abandoned boat, nice one. I agree and too bad that heritage in these old structures aren’t better preserved.

    1. Thanks, Mary! We go on holiday to Greece and the islands for their ancient ruins and architecture (as well as the sun and sea, of course) but many younger Greeks no longer seem to have any respect for it all. The amount of graffiti has increased alarmingly in the six years we’ve been here.

      1. The country is in such an incredible period in their history, I hope the marked time doesn’t scar them in ways they’ll never recover. Perhaps the young ones need hope for their future. I’ll bet your holidays were magical in that beautiful land.

          1. Now that is the saddest news to read. I have a friend over there who totally dropped off and none of us can find here – she was on the edge. We’ve all sent notes, etc. with no response – this is very sad. It must be hard for you Sarah – raw beauty surrounded by so much turmoil.

            1. That’s very sad news. Hard up to a point but then the same thing is happening in the UK and in other places in Europe because of austerity. The pride and determination of the Greeks is, however, admirable. Where everyone in the UK has been so oppressed as to have no more energy or strength left to fight, the Greeks, for the most part, continue to keep hope in their hearts, to quote one young lady I talked to a couple of years ago. They’re also more than prepared to work at anything if it helps them survive. The lady was actually an engineer but got off her butt and I met her in the second-hand shop she was working in.
