HI Dear Sarah…..One of my favourite people, artist and friend was Howard Thorne (now diseased) Howard was a superb old school sign painter. His signs going back a lot of years are now worth a great deal of money…and so they should be. I had the great honour of painting his portrait. Thank you for this post and for reminding me of some very happy times with a very special sign painter. Hope it’s not too windy on IOW – it is blustery, showery and quite cool here, which I have to tell you I am relishing. Enjoy the weekend with your little friend. Janet 🙂 xx

How marvellous to have reminded you of happy times (that warms me up on an Island that is very blustery, stormy, horrid and cold this week!) I have my best big friend down here this week as well as my little friend! We have done none of the exciting things we had planned. Hey ho. Hope all is well with you. 😀 xx

What a difference a couple of weeks make. Cooler here with much needed rain. Wont be long before September and autumn are upon us….happy days and continue to enjoy your Little Friend. Janet 🙂 xx

I love old signs, especially those of pubs and inns. It seems to be a lost art, so a look back at the skill is long overdue.
Best wishes, Pete. x

I love old signs myself and the beautiful atmospheric sense they conjure up in us

They are sublime, aren’t they?

Fascinating, Sarah. I love these old signs – they really were an art form as well as having a practical purpose.

Yes. So much that was beautiful is no longer so.

Interesting history, there was an art to this.

There was indeed. I was shocked recently by a logo created by our local sign shop to denote our village. It was a hack job in which no imagination had been applied!

These signs are still used in places like Charleston, South Carolina.

If I were alive in 1762, I would have stood in line for tickets to the event! But the 2018 updated version looks really interesting, too.

If I’d been alive then, so would I!
