First Night Design | Reason for Absence

I’m not around at the moment as I’m finding it tough to deal with the loss of my ex-husband and friend, Roy Heather, who died on Wednesday morning.

He was best known for playing Sid the café owner in John Sullivan’s classic sitcom, Only Fools and Horses. Looking at the tweets being sent is extraordinary. I wouldn’t exactly say he’s trending, but I’m still amazed by the love and support being shown. Someone even tagged him alongside Joan Rivers – this seems right since Roy could make anyone laugh!

Update: If you want to know more about Roy, I have written an obituary for him on my theatre blog, Rogues & Vagabonds.

Take care and keep laughing!

  2. Sounds like you, and the world, were lucky to have had him around. I keep telling myself that loss must have many crucial lessons in it, because it comes in so many forms at this time of life. May your fond memories of him and the laughter you shared sustain you.

  4. Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Grief is a very private emotion but it is one that should be shared with others. I am sure that those of you who delight in Sarah Vernon’s theatre history, interviews and her wonderful designs will feel that it is appropriate to reblog her heartfelt tribute to her former husband and good friend Roy Heather. Sarah – we can only pass on our loving wishes at a time like this but even though we have not met our thoughts are sincere. ♥

  5. So very sorry indeed to hear about Roy. That’s such sad news. Thank you for sharing your memories of your dear friend and ex-husband. He was such a talented man and brought joy to many. I loved watching the clip from Only Fools and Horses that you included in the obituary. What a great reminder of his skills. I loved his comment to you: “I’m decorative, not functional.” Wishing you strength at this hard time, Sarah. Take it easy. Ann

  6. Bless you all for such wonderfully supportive comments. Our marriage may have been in the 80s and it may not have lasted very long but we stayed friends till the end and he was an enormous part of my life. Love doesn’t dissipate just because you divorce. Not in my life, anyway!
