I am sure that the artist Émile Vernon and I must be related somewhere along the line! My father’s side of the family came over with William the Conqueror from a place called Vernon in France. I’m doing research on my family tree so I’ll let you know!

Take care and keep laughing!
You have some interesting and distinguished relatives. Let’s hope that Emile turns out to be another one!
Best wishes, Pete.

I think I can assume that we all came down from the same French Vernon root, whether in France or by going to England but it might take a great deal of effort to work out the exact connection! x

Beautiful picture. I hope you find that family connection to the artist. Keep us up to date with the family tree progress.

It is rather, isn’t it. I need a replacement of brain cells at the moment to get to grips with it all!

I’m at the stage where I’m getting much more confused than clearer about all those forebears! I do hope to write about more of them on First Night History. But when?!

William was a descendent of Vikings.

I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to say, Brenda.

Perhaps your relative was, too. From what I’ve read, they came from a place that was settled by Vikings.

I thought that was probably what you meant but I didn’t want to assume! From the little research I’ve done this afternoon, it looks as if the whole of Normandy was settled by Vikings so you’re absolutely right.

Sorry to be ambiguous. I was in a hurry to get out to a family wedding. Now my whole family of five is crammed into a hotel room. So I’d better stop typing and let them sleep. 🙂 Family legend has it that we are descended from William the Conquerer, but my grandmother’s joy was diminished when I told her that he was called William the Bastard, first. I’ve always taken an interest in stories about that region since I heard the legend. Cheers.

Your poor grandmother! I’ve always loved it that he was once a Bastard. Enjoy the wedding!

He must have been quite a man to rise as he did, to gather an army and lead them.

That would be cool. Genealogy is great fun, especially when we can make such great connections.

It is, Diana, but it’s very time-consuming!

Aha! If true, this may be partly where your creativity and artistry comes from. I shall not surprised if that is the case.
