  1. We must never forget these brave women….who paved the way for us. I am always proud to say that I was born in a hospital (South London Women’s Hospital) which was founded by a suffragette, because women doctors and surgeons at that time could not get jobs in ‘regular’ hospitals! The only males in the hospital were the boy babies:) Happy International Women’s Day to you…and keep smiling….Janet:)xx

    1. I guess I can almost make the same boast in that I was born in the General Lying-In Hospital in Lambeth, which later merged with St Thomas’. I’ve just discovered that it was opened in 1767 as one of the first maternity hospitals. Well, I never! Pleasing to discover that they admitted single mothers as well as married women – enlightened. Not founded by a suffragette but good nevertheless. No, we must never forget. Keep smiling 🙂 xx

  2. Lying-in hospitals were charities aimed at preventing the horrific levels of infant mortality at the time, generally due to ignorance about basic hygiene and the women not given time to recover after the travails of birth. Babies were needed to replace the many men who died in wars at the time. Attempts were made to establish Magdalene hospitals for unmarried women, but these were often opposed as they were said to encourage immorality.

  3. Reblogged this on Rethinking Life and commented:
Never forget what our brave foremothers did for us. Never take for granted, the freedoms women have because of them. Teach your children about the wonderful things these women did, so the know because they won’t learn about it in school.
