‘Sleeping Beauty’s earliest influence apparently comes from “Perceforest,” a French romance first printed in 1528. While not a Sleeping Beauty tale, Perceforest (1528) contains many elements similar to the later Sleeping Beauty tales. Some scholars debate the connection between the stories, but I believe there are enough similarities to warrant comparisons. You can read more about Perceforest on Wikipedia.
The next known version of the tale came from Giambattista Basile’s “Sun, Moon, and Talia” also known more formally as…’ SurLaLune
I thought it was time to revisit Sleeping Beauty, created with a vintage postcard from The Graphics Fairy, and blended with one of my vintage postcard backs and a scan of a piece of coffee bean paper. I have used the design on several new products, as below.

My favourite mouse silhouette! The dinky little thing has done good and sold herself several times over as address labels.
And for my next post, I shall tell you that a global hotel conglomerate has ordered a million cushions, and a well-known stationery chain has requested countless boxes of notebooks. In which case, the world is my oyster!

A simple design but mine own! It started life in the ’90s as a handmade card at a time when such a thing was still possible for me. I’m very fond of its simplicity.

This is a digital collage from 2012 in which I used a vintage theatre poster for the musical comedy The Earl and the Girl as my starting point and layered it with several pieces of ephemera in my theatre collection, including a black & white postcard of the actor-manager Sir Seymour Hicks.
The above is not the postcard I used but another one for sale at my First Night Vintage store on Zazzle. Why? Because I don’t seem to have uploaded the other one for sale!
The Earl and the Girl was produced by William Greet and first staged in 1903 at the Adelphi Theatre, London, before transferring to the Lyric Theatre in 1904. The show was also produced on Broadway in 1905 with Eddie Foy in the lead. The book was by Hicks, with music by Ivan Caryll and lyrics by Percy Greenbank.

The Dancer and the Pierrot is a digital collage I adapted about three or four years ago from one of Jules Cheret’s posters, Third Panel: la Pantomime, printed in 1900. I layered it with a couple of my background textures and various elements scanned from my theatre archive.
I view it as a Christmas piece but it would work equally well for any occasion if you were buying the greeting card or postcard.
