Valentine Blush © First Night Design/Sarah Vernon

I can’t bear it when I have nothing of my own to post because while I love finding other work on art, books, writing or photography to introduce you to, there’s always those niggling thoughts that run: “But you need to be promoting your own work to earn money!” or “Why aren’t you going back to writing your memoirs?” But it’s got to stop, as I’m sure you’ll tell me. Living is more important when push comes to ultimate shove and you’re not the twenty-eight-year-old you feel.

Valentine Blush is new and I had every intention of uploading it to the galleries in time to catch the Valentine market. It didn’t happen and so it’s still not available to buy. I don’t care because I’ve become more embedded in the local community by making some new friends including writer Barbara Jane Mackie whose screenwriter father, Philip Mackie, adapted short stories by Saki in 1962 with a cast that just happened to include my father, Richard Vernon. Some of you might remember Mackie’s later work as he was responsible for the incomparable adaptation of The Naked Civil Servant [1975] with a never-to-be-forgotten performance by the late John Hurt as Quentin Crisp.

I’m hot-footing it to the hospital tomorrow for my cataract operation. I leave you with some of my favourites for Valentine’s Day. I should be back before then. Mind you, while one would normally expect to be in and out in a day with such a surgery, I’m told I have to stay in the night before and the night after. I’m spitting with rage at the ghastliness!

All of these pieces are my own except for Kissing on the Chaise-Longue which is a vintage postcard I restored.

My internet connection is even worse today so no chance of doing a new post. Here’s a Valentine one from a year ago. I am aware that you’ve seen the first one recently!

One of the most insightful of quotes about love and the nature of relationships comes from William Shakespeare and features on an early design of mine.

Love is Not Love... CardLove is Not Love… Card by FirstNightDesign

“Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove.” Shakespeare, sonnet 116

It is easy to forget this when young.  Desperate for love after a confusing  and contradictory set of lessons from childhood, I would constantly alter and bend in my late teens and early 20s.  This is not love.  If the object of your affections wants to mould you a certain way, or you get the feeling he or she is not going to like you if you behave a certain way, this is not love.

Today is a good day for I discovered that the above artworks, You’re the Cream in My Coffee Valentine and Travelling with the Buzzard, were variously featured in the Fine Art America groups Digital Touch, 3 A Day Greeting Cards and Female Artists.

My weekend delights began last night when I received notification that a customer had bought 40 postcards of Sing a Song of Sixpence on Zazzle.  A design from three or four years ago, it is a perfect card for theatre professionals, including as it does the theatrical form of good luck, ‘Break a Leg’.

I hope your weekend is proving equally delightful.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Yesterday I attempted a new piece for St Valentine. And failed miserably. Instead, I give you this diversion from Drew McKevitt, poet, knitter and illustrator of Pears.

If someone loves you, they love you, warts and all, and it matters not a jot if you have heavy thighs or a habit they find annoying.  It took me some years and many mistakes, including a marriage, to realise this. There is nothing healthier than being comfortable in your own skin. While this self-confidence, I have found, comes with age and experience, realising early on what isn’t healthy can smooth the path.  (Your time is up!)

Love Letters Valentine Throw Pillows
Love Letters Valentine Throw Pillows by FirstNightDesign

As much as I appreciate technology, I am sad that we have almost lost the art of letter-writing, particularly when it comes to love letters. It is this sadness that inspired the collage piece on this cushion. Hand-written letters of whatever description are still a joy to receive.  I  can no longer reply in kind because of  dexterity problems and hate that this is so.

Which brings me to Elizabeth Barrett Browning and  Sonnet 43, Sonnets from the Portuguese, [pub. 1850].

Pen and Ink Love Greeting Card
Pen and Ink Love Greeting Card by FirstNightDesign

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Take care and keep laughing!
