My favourite mouse silhouette! The dinky little thing has done good and sold herself several times over as address labels.

And for my next post, I shall tell you that a global hotel conglomerate has ordered a million cushions, and a well-known stationery chain has requested countless boxes of notebooks. In which case, the world is my oyster!

“I can resist everything except temptation.”

This was one of my very first designs, which I created by hand-colouring a vintage bat from my Picture Book of Animals.

I adore paper. I love the feel of it and the smell of it. Handmade or manufactured, paper in all its forms spells infinite magic.  It can be a book, a notepad, a sculpture.  It can be a print or a collage, labels or  craft paper, train tickets, paint sample strips, bookmarks or cardboard; even scrapbook  and school rough book paper give me the same emotions. Not loo paper, mind you, even if it does have a crossword printed on it or an insipid ‘pretty’ pattern.

If the paper is already marked in some form, whether with words or pictures or both, it’s the pleasure of looking and reading.  If the paper is blank, it’s the joy of creating something special.  Sadly, my days of scissors and paste are long since over (that pesky disability again) or I would be creating marvels in papier-mâché, or so I like to think. The last time I mentioned this, it was to write about the talented artists who craft everything from greeting cards to dolls houses. I designed a card and fully intended to cut it out and stick it together.  I lie. I was going to get Mr FND to do all the physical work.  Ultimately, it went by the wayside and became a digitally designed image only because I broke my hip. You can see it here.

In any event, Zazzle has just introduced what they call pocket journals.  The word ‘journal’ is a misnomer as I doubt they would serve as a repository for much scribbling.

Sleeping Beauty Gift Wrapping Paper
Sleeping Beauty Gift Wrapping Paper

Having just sold some of my Sleeping Beauty wrapping paper, I decided Princess Aurora, as she has been known since the animated Disney film in 1959, deserved a post of her own.

The original story, The Beauty sleeping in the wood, or La Belle au bois dormant, was published by Charles Perrault in 1697 as part of his Histoires ou contes du temps passé, before being taken up by the Brothers Grimm.

According to ListVerse, the original story has unpleasant overtones in that ‘the young woman is put to sleep because of a prophesy, rather than a curse. And […] the king seeing her asleep, and rather fancying having a bit, rapes her. After nine months she gives birth to two children (while she is still asleep). One of the children sucks her finger which removes the piece of flax which was keeping her asleep. She wakes up to find herself raped and the mother of two kids’. Macabre, mais oui!
