Sherry Key, Mixed Media Artist

Tarzan's Jane by Sherry Key Tropical jungle and a young, nubile Jane as I would have imagined a young sexy woman woman in the early 1900’s when the Tarzan novels were penned by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

8″ x 10″  archival canvas board. Rich colors, patterns and design done in oils, mixed media, paper collage and hand painted black and white image of my version of Jane.

I love Sci-Fi and discovered Edgar Rice Burroughs many Sci-Fi novels in late 2012. I’ve read all the John Carter of Mars collection and most of the Barsoom collection and some in those series I have gone back and re-read, several times.

I’m just amazed that someone in that era was such a forward thinker of  science fiction. I’ve seen a lot of modern science fiction movies that I thought were original ideas of today’s famous movie directors and producers but now I know they must have tuned into…

The first calendar comprises a mix of my designs created during the last eighteen months. The Punch & Judy calendar features illustrations from original copper-plate engravings for Mr Pug’s Visit; or, the Disasters of Mr. Punch, published in 1806 by J. Harris on the corner of St. Paul’s Church Yard. It’s that last detail that delights me particularly!

June is bustin’ out all over for me as I have had the most marvellous compliments on my art in the last few weeks and, to top it all, Mademoiselle Couture has just been featured by the RedBubble group, Artists Universe, in their Artist of the Month – June 2013.  As a self-taught artist, who has spent most of the last 30-odd years as an actress, this is an honour indeed.

Fine Art America is holding a contest to choose images for their next national television advertising campaign. There’s a catch — isn’t there always.  You can submit three images in total but any one image has to have garnered at least 250 votes by 30th June to go forward into the next, juried, round.  I can’t see myself having an ice cream’s chance in hell of getting anywhere near such a figure, but I would be very happy to get as many votes as I can.  Voting is open to all although if you are not already a member of Fine Art America, you will need to register as a ‘collector’. On the other hand, if you are an artist yourself – photographer, fine artist, mixed media artist – why not consider joining FAA, building a portfolio and entering the contest yourself.

My three images are as follows:

In the hope that you like one or all of them enough to register and vote, I thank you.  As I understand it, you have a hundred votes to play with but can only vote once for any given image.

My latest abstract is the result of a happy accident.  I began with the idea of creating a faux vintage picture with an animal, in other words, something along the lines of the image below (genuine vintage).

img-thing

But as soon as I blended a background from Textures of Italy and a photograph of a goat that I took a couple of years ago, I was so delighted by the shapes, textures and colours, that I wanted go no further.

I have no doubt I’ll be doing my faux vintage animal in the near future, though.

THE ABSTRACT

There’s nothing I like better than playing around with photographs and textures and colours to create something.  This is a preview of my most recent ‘playing’, an abstract work which includes part of a photograph of rocks, a free texture that you may remember my posting a few weeks before Christmas.  I do hope Tearing Green Paper appeals to you.  It may or may not be finished yet — watch this space!

THE CHALLENGE

Talking of free textures, I’d like to challenge the creative souls among you to make something with the rocks [also shown below] and I will feature my favourites in a future post that will be publicised on FND’s Facebook page, Linked In, Google+ and Twitter.  My top favourite will be highlighted in a future edition of my online newspaper, First Night Design Times.

You have until 12 midnight GMT on Sunday 17th February 2013 to submit your entries for the challenge.  Please send your creation [no larger than 500 pixels on its longest side] by email to info@firstnightdesign.co.uk. Please make ROCK CHALLENGE in uppercase your subject line.   Thank you.  I’m greatly looking forward to what you come up with.

I know, I know, you’re thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas and the last thing you want to think about is the New Year.  However, if you’re anything like me, it will suddenly be 26th January and you’re writing everything on Post-It notes — which you keep losing — and you still haven’t bought a calendar.  Computer calendars, it’s true, have a lot of uses but the device is never on when you need urgently to check the time of that dental appointment or the grand party you’ve been looking forward to.  And guess what?  You check your mobile and realise you didn’t sync it!

Here are my choices, which include my calendars as well as those that have caught my eye on Zazzle.
