I’m back. I’m rested but a little hysterical since I have had two more conditions diagnosed; one requires surgery, the other is a second incurable autoimmune condition for which the only treatment will be medication, which might or might not make a difference. You couldn’t make it up!

This is one of my very early abstracts created out of some flower and leaf photographs.

This is a photograph of our own magnificent mongrel, a cross between a Terrier and a Jack Russell (we think). I have processed the image in Photoshop by adding a texture from The Graphics Fairy in order to bring out the vibrance of his fur coat and the colour of the grass, although that vibrance is missing in the screenshot of the spiral notebook below.

I never thought it was possible to love an animal as much as I love Pisch. Yes, that’s his name and before you all start to comment on what it means in German, let me explain that it came about when he was rescued by a friend of ours who wanted to find a home for him. “What do you call him?” I asked. “Pisch,” said our friend. He went on to say, “As in the noise you make to get a cat to go away.” So there you have it. He’s seven years old and I want him to live forever!

I probably wouldn’t have put him up for sale, so to speak, had it not been for a Cats & Dogs Challenge at the Art Universe group on Redbubble. I’m still not sure about uploading it to the other galleries. I would have turned him into a digital painting if my GMX-PhotoPainter software was working. But it ain’t!

‘Yes, he’s got all them different kinds of thoroughbred blood in him, and he’s got other kinds you ain’t mentioned and that you ain’t slick enough to see.’ – Don Marquis

‘He wa’n’t no common dog, he wa’n’t no mongrel; he was a composite. A composite dog is a dog that is made up of all the valuable qualities that’s in the dog breed—kind of a syndicate; and a mongrel is made up of all riffraff that’s left over.’ – Mark Twain

I’m not particularly good at natural history. I can admire and squeak with delight at a bird or a flower but ask me to name them and I’ll look at you blankly. I downloaded this bird print of c.1879 from The Graphics Fairy and since the inestimable Karen Watson had not specified anything other than ‘birds’, I searched high and low (on Google, of course) to find out what kind of creature I was attempting to ‘doctor’ with my own textures and vintage postcard background.

It led me to a site selling prints from another copy of the 19th century book from which it comes. I know now that they are finches. If push had come to shove, I’d probably have said swallows.

The Jungle Look

Playtime! This abstract took two seconds. I lie. It took about five minutes. I had an old photograph of leaves (probably weeds, although I’m sure the green-fingered among you will be able to tell me what it is) in our Cretan garden which I had meant to do something with for aeons.

The Jungle Look

I used a freebie texture from Design Cuts and placed it on top of the photograph. I  chose the ‘Difference’ blending mode in Photoshop.

The Jungle Look

There revealed was a rather captivating abstract with greens and golds and purples.

Have a bountiful weekend!

THE GOOD NEWS: my Cosmote internet connection is back to normal…well, as normal as it will ever be in these parts! I had not, it turns out, used my monthly bandwidth limit. Everyone’s connection has been unconscionably slow in this area for the last week or so because of the weather — a wind that could knock you flat in a second, let alone destroy elements of the landscape like aerials.

The joy of being able to create again knows no bounds. It soothes my soul. For Oriental Glimpse, I mixed and matched innumerable flower and architectural images from my collection and The Graphics Fairy along with a textured background from Denise at 2 Lil’ Owls, courtesy of a specially discounted bundle from Design Cuts.

As it’s been a while since I’ve shown the layers that go into creating a particular image, I thought I’d give you the three pieces that make up Red Rose.

I started with the back of a vintage advertising card from The Old Design Shop.

OldDesignShop_AdCardTheFairBackblog

But no matter what I tried, it would not gel with this rose from The Graphics Fairy.

Vintage-Moss-Rose-Image-GraphicsFairy

I discarded it and went in search of a background with reddish tones from 2 Lil’ Owls’ Effervescent collection and decided upon this number.

The effect created by blending the rose in ‘multiply’ mode over the top was very pleasing but there was something missing.

I searched through 2 Lil’ Owls‘ French Brocante collection and my first choice proved the perfect addition when blended in ‘colour burn’ mode and sandwiched between the rose and the ‘effervescent’ background.

Et voilà!

As I’ve often said, there’s many a tweak and a twist in the process before I’m happy but if you are expecting me to write it all out in this post, you’ve got another think coming! As Shirley Conran so memorably once said, life’s too short to stuff a mushroom, and it’s certainly too short to detail each tweak. Pay me and I might!

I took a photograph of this yellow rose some months ago and have played with it ever since to little effect. Until, that is, someone posted a link on Facebook — in the Texture Artists group — to the British artist Sarah Gardner who also sells beautiful textures. Registering with her site gives you a free download of four textures. I added the one pictured below and I was off and running!

The typography elements are from a vintage advert for the Café Royal in London’s Regent Street from one of my theatre periodicals dated  late 19th and early 20th century, Play Pictorial.
