First Night Design | Let There Be Light!

A flying visit to show there’s a little more order in the house. Not much but a little. The downside is that the word ‘flying’ is a complete misnomer as I’ve overexerted myself and done something to my hip (yes, the one that was replaced a few years ago). This means that my rather grand, brass-effect zimmer frame bought in Crete has come in very handy.

It doesn’t, however, allow for much sorting out of what remains to be done but I’ve employed a delightful handyman who hails from Vienna and has been a local here for many years. He moved a multitude of heavy boxes — yes, those damn books — from one room to the other on Friday, and he is returning to put together some flat pack beds and a couple of other units (Ikea, naturally) Oh, and move more boxes.

In the meantime, life can be very sweet when you least expect it for on the sales front, I’ve sold two of these light switch covers…

Make Me a Willow Cabin Valentine Postcard

Make Me a Willow Cabin was created some time ago but I don’t think I’ve ever sold it as a greeting card or postcard or on anything, which is a shame. I’m rather fond of it.

‘Make me a willow cabin…,’ declares Viola to Olivia in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Viola, disguised as Cesario, has been sent by Orsino to declare his love for Olivia. Viola, however, chooses to give the message in her own way, telling Olivia that if he, Cesario, were in love with her, he would go much further than simply send a go-between.

I had never heard of the Norwich-born British artist Eloise Harriet Stannard until I discovered her on Wikipedia and used a detail from her Christmas Still Life (oil on canvas) to create a book cover for The Romantic Manifesto. Such luscious colours and textures, such exquisite detail. Just look at those part-peeled oranges and you will start salivating. I believe I’ve seen the painting before — probably a chocolate box or two — but had never known the artist responsible.

And there you have it. Well, not quite. There were, naturally, many different stages in between during which I twiddled and smoothed, blended and swore. The profanity came thick and fast because my touchpad kept sticking. Dog hairs. They get everywhere. At least that was what my tame computer consultant said last time. But when he showed me the evidence, I told him I couldn’t be absolutely certain that I wasn’t the main culprit as short, white dog hair inside a computer looks suspiciously like short, white human hair.
