While I’m still having problems with my sight and only able to ‘press’ products on sale from my various galleries as posts rather than create something new, I’m continuing with my vintage kick. This is a rather charming music sheet cover.

Wisdom Extraction: Sadly, I’m not feeling so chipper today, nor did I at the end of last night. I think it must be a delayed reaction.  Mind you, Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough helped!

First take a blue texture for the background and put it in Photoshop’s Normal mode. Next take a vintage theatre curtain from EKDuncan and adjust the colour balance until you achieve exactly the kind of green you love. Make sure the curtain is in Linear Burn mode. Top it off with Girl in a Large Hat by Caesar Boëtius van Everdingen (c. 1645 – c. 1650) from the Rijksmuseum. Put the latter in Multiply mode and you’ll find you’ve turned a 17th century girl into a lady from the 1940s modelling Christian Dior’s famous New Look. Who’d have thunk! Don’t you just love the hat? Incidentally, the French for New Look is ‘Le New Look’!

‘Despite a short career, Christian Dior dominated the world of fashion during the late 1940s and 1950s, with the hourglass silhouette of his voluptuous New Look.’ The Design Museum

‘The New Look brought me heavy mail. Letters arrived by the thousands––mostly enthusiastic but some indignant. A garage owner from Los Angeles wrote and told me that he had sworn to “tear me apart” on his next visit to Paris. According to him, it was my fault that his wife looked like a stuffed doll of the time of the Civil War.’ — Christian Dior Enjoy Your Style.

‘Girl Wearing a Kokoshnik in Profile’ is a Léon Bakst painting in a private collection, which I downloaded from Wikimedia and blended with a handwritten document, also from Wikimedia, and a texture from Kerstin Frank.

The kokoshnik (Russian: коко́шник; IPA: [kɐˈkoʂnʲɪk]) is a traditional Russian head-dress worn by women and girls to accompany the sarafan, primarily worn in the northern regions of Russia in the 16th to 19th centuries. Wikipedia

‘Sleeping Beauty’s earliest influence apparently comes from “Perceforest,” a French romance first printed in 1528. While not a Sleeping Beauty tale, Perceforest (1528) contains many elements similar to the later Sleeping Beauty tales. Some scholars debate the connection between the stories, but I believe there are enough similarities to warrant comparisons. You can read more about Perceforest on Wikipedia.

The next known version of the tale came from Giambattista Basile’s “Sun, Moon, and Talia” also known more formally as…’ SurLaLune

I thought it was time to revisit Sleeping Beauty, created with a vintage postcard from  The Graphics Fairy, and blended with one of my vintage postcard backs and a scan of a piece of coffee bean paper. I have used the design on several new products, as below.

Dance, Little Lady

‘Tho’ you’re only seventeen,
Far too much of life you’ve seen,
Syncopated child.
Maybe if you only knew
Where your path is leading to
You’d become less wild
But I know it’s vain
Trying to explain
While there’s this insane
Music in your brain

Dance, dance, dance little lady
Youth is pleasing to the rhythm
Beating in your mind
Dance, dance, dance little lady
So obsessed with second best
No rest you’ll ever find
Time and tide and trouble
Never, never wait
Let the cauldron bubble
Justify your fate
Dance, dance, dance little lady
Dance, dance, dance little lady
Leave tomorrow behind.

Time and tide and trouble
Never, never wait
Let the cauldron bubble
Justify your fate
Dance, dance, dance little lady
Dance, dance, dance little lady
Leave tomorrow behind.

—Noël Coward, from This Year of Grace, his musical revue from 1928. And below is the man himself singing the number.
