I had a two-day window last week during which I could see rather better than usual. I read a book and created the piece below. Back to ‘normal’ now, though!

I blended and tweaked two images from Wikimedia. One is advertising a French event on 14th July 1915 in aid of The Great War. The other is a fashion illustration from Journal des dames et des modes, 1913, by H. Robert Dammy. Both are delightful in their own right but blending them together was a fascinating process and enhanced the Art Deco effect.

I can’t pretend it’s my favourite period in the history of the decorative arts when it comes to architecture and interior design but the fashion and illustration of the time has a place in my heart.

I’m putting my cards on the table to tell you I’m in love with my latest piece, a burnt-out pier! I keep looking at it in Photoshop and giving a contented sigh or two! And this I say coming straight from a conversation with Vanessa Couchman about the difficulty of promoting your own work after an upbringing which taught us never to put ourselves forward or show off — if anything, we were directed to show off the work of others. “I don’t think it gets any more comfortable but one becomes more proficient at it,” said Vanessa. She’s right. It’s something we have to do on social media if we are to get any attention. That said, I’m not feeling remotely uncomfortable telling you of my love on this occasion; I wonder why.

I began with this photograph by Victoria Alexander at Unsplash (loving this site of free, high-resolution photographs, if you hadn’t already guessed).

I used one texture — 2LO Distressed 11 from Denise Love at 2 Lil’ Owls, bought via Design Cuts – and another from Lenabem-Anna J. on Flickr.

There followed a great deal of blending and stretching and tweaking before it was done.

It really is astonishing what can be achieved with digital art software — in this case, Photoshop. I was playing around with a map and a fish (from The Graphics Fairy), and a photograph of a setting Cretan sun — no, please don’t ask why this combination! I discarded the map and selected the sun area of the photograph to make it the background. I then went through all the available blending modes for the salmon layer without success until I came to one near the bottom called ‘difference’. Immediately I was struck by the effect and it is what you see here. It reminds me of etching on copper scraperboards (scratchboards in the US), which I once tried my hand at. Unsuccessfully.

Can I stop showing off my art as framed prints? Of course I can’t. It looks so grown-up!
