Take care and keep laughing!

Originally created in May 2014, this collage uses a vintage handwritten image from Wikimedia. The mallards, swan, and the butterflies hovering around some flowers, are all from The Graphics Fairy.

‘Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.’ Nathaniel Hawthorne

‘I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days – three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.’ John Keats, Bright Star: Love Letters and Poems of John Keats to Fanny Brawne

‘Butterflies are self-propelled flowers.’  Robert A. Heinlein

These butterflies are found in China, Japan, and Korea, and come from an image at  The Biodiversity Library. The soft background of flowers is adapted from a painting at the Rijksmuseum — I’m so thankful this inspiring museum allows artists to download some of their exhibits to merge them into our own work. The other texture, which includes the flowers bottom right of the image, is from Kerstin Frank.

“Damn everything but the circus!. . .The average ‘painter’ ‘sculptor’ ‘poet’ ‘composer’ ‘playwright’ is a person who cannot leap through a hoop from the back of a galloping horse, make people laugh with a clown’s mouth, orchestrate twenty lions.”

It may or may not surprise you to know that this is, in essence, an inverted version of Japanned Butterflies. A little blending tweak here, a little blending tweak there and Bob’s your uncle!

Any followers who have visited my new blog, First Night History, will doubtless have known that sooner or later I would create a piece that used the handwritten header image for the blog, which I found on Wikimedia.

And so I have! The mallards, swan, and the butterflies hovering around some flowers, are all from The Graphics Fairy.

Enjoy! And let’s protect all our birds, particularly the eggs and nests of such as English robins and starlings since Natural England has proposed that their destruction be allowed without special licence. See Tom Pride’s blog post listed below.

The Stuff They Won't Include in Any Tourist Guide: The Real England

The Real England is a concise, direct, and not-so-gentle window into the depths of the leftovers of the world’s once greatest empire. It is told from the perspective of one lone (or not so lone) long term visitor. It informs one of the dregs of the country and helps to explain quaint British oddities such as the crack addicted chav.
