Both of these designs are adapted from my original late 19th century music hall playbills for the Palace Theatre of Varieties, ‘The Handsomest Music Hall in Europe’.

This London theatre was originally built as a venue for opera by Richard D’Oyly Carte but only one opera – Arthur Sullivan’s Ivanhoe – was ever produced.  The theatre was renamed the Palace Theatre in 1911, a name it retains to this day.

  1. It’s the joy of life that comes through more on the first but both are beautiful. You must have an amazing collection and they are real finds when you give them your own touch of magic. Fantastic!

    1. Yes, it is. Looking at it makes me happy – that’s also the joy of yellow. I was very lucky to inherit a great-great uncle’s scrapbook of theatre programmes. The only problem is that with the programmes being stuck in, there are a lot of images and text that are lost forever. Thank you for the compliment, Olga.

  2. Gee, I seldom agree with Nietzsche–but I do here. The older I get the more I believe music is the most influential art form. (And I come from a background of visual artists.) I love these two creations of yours!
